I know we all want to have long and healthy hair, but we should focus on the health of our hair first before we focus on the length. Here, I compressed some of the tips into 10 different points. Have fun going through them and success in your hair journey.

  1. LOVE YOUR HAIR: Before thinking of how to grow a healthy hair, you must love your hair first. For example, for the fact you have a type 4c hair, don’t be wishing you had a type 3a/3b. Love your hair as it is because that is the beginning of your hair journey, no one can love it for you.
  2. WATER IS NECESSARY: I know this point has been a little over emphasized but it is just the truth. Now this points has to parts to it…
    • First in the drinking aspect, it is very essential because your hair also feeds on what you take inside, and as you know or should know…water make ¼ of the weight of a hair strand, therefore you should take at least 1.5liters of water a day because lack of water causes dry and brittle hair and I am sure you don’t want that. #wink
    • Secondarily the moisturizing aspect, some people just apply oil or cream to their hair without moisturizing it first. Oils/creams are sealants, they are not for moisturizing instead it is to seal the moisture in, which is water. You get it now right?
  3. PROTECTIVE STYLES: Now here some people just miss what protective style really means. Protective styles are styles you do that keeps your ends away. I’m going to try and be brief. Sometimes your hair just wants to be left alone, you mustn’t style your hair a different style every day. It’s better for the hair to just be put in style for a while, for example; braids, twists, cornrows… etc. even wigs but mind you while there are in these style, it’s very essential that the hair and scalp should be taken care of also.
  4. AVOID TOO TIGHT HAIR DOS: I know we all feel like the hair is really neat when its tight, but did you know it causes damage to your hair follicles? Which causes you pain and won’t really get relieve till like after a week when new growth has been made. I’m not saying you should make very loose shabby looking hair but it shouldn’t be too tight, let your hairdresser know if you aren’t the one making your hair.
  5. SLAYING EDGES ISNT NECESSARY: I get the feeling when our edges are slayed, looking all peng but it isn’t always necessary. Your edges are one of the weakest parts of your hair and are prone to damage faster than the remaining parts of your hair. Treat them like babies.
  6. DEEP CONDITION: This is very important in your wash day. Every time you wash your hair, make sure your deep condition because it replenishes some of the moisture lost during the week and while washing. Especially for coloured treated hair, it is very necessary to deep condition. It also helps prevent damage, because without moisture, your hair is prone to breakage.
  7. SATIN/SILK PILLOCASE/BONNET: Cotton isn’t a friend to your hair as it dries up the moisture in the hair and also causes friction on the hair. Silk or satin pillow case or bonnet helps retain the moisture in the hair and also causes less friction on the hair therefore reducing spilt ends and brittle hair.
  8. MASSAGE YOUR HAIR: Massaging your hair helps blood flow in the scalp thereby promoting hair growth. You can either use your finger tips or you can use a scalp massager, anyone works.
  9. NEVER DO YOUR HAIR WHEN YOU’RE TIRED: This is a big no, your hair needs tender loving. When you’re tired your patience level is low and we all know that dealing with our hair needs time and patience. If you’re tired, leave your hair and wait till you’re in the mood for your hair before you do anything.
  10. BE POSITIVE: Once in a while, speak positive words to your hair. Never speak Ill if your hair because I know you want to have a long and health hair, and if you do, you’re only contradicting yourself and your hair will just be confused, lol.

  • BONUS TIP:
    • SEE ALL THIS AS FUN: Trust me if you don’t make it fun for yourself it will all look like stress to you and that is why you see some people giving up on their hair journey and caring less.
